At the game conference, Paul McCartney kidded, “Whoever thought we’d end up as androids?” His bandmate Ringo added “The Game is good, the graphics are very good, and we look great.” McCartney and Starr robotically parodied how their game characters walked without getting any laughs from the game industry audience. Beatle family members Yoko Ono and Olivia and Dhani Harrison, and George Martin’s Son also made brief appearances at the conference.

The Beatles Rock Band video game will allow people to step into the lives of the Beatles and perform hits such as I Saw Her Standing There, I Feel Fine, Day Tripper, Back in the USSR, Octopus’ Garden, and Get Back. You can hold controllers that are replicas of the Beatle’s instruments including an optional limited edition Rickenbacker and Gretsch guitars.

With downloadable remastered songs, the game is going to be the Beatles first jump into distributing their catalog digitally having denied the release of their catalog as MP3s to iTunes and other online sites.

On the same day as the game release, the Band will re-issue their CDs as brand new remixed songs. If they’re as good as the remixed Let it Be and Yellow Submarine, you’re in for a great time. Giles Martin remixed the songs and publicized the remastered Beatles song catalog release at the E3 Video Game Convention.

Star and McCartney Played at a New York benefit in April, but appearances together have been uncommon since the breakup. I’m hoping that Ringo will make an appearance at McCartney’s Citi Field concert. It will be the first concert in the Mets new baseball stadium. In a historic concert, the Beatles were the first to play the NY Mets original Shea Stadium.

As the credit crunch digs its heels in, those of us who love our holidays have all been left wondering how we will be able to get the holiday feeling in 2009, without spending too much cash.  France is well known as one of the most popular destinations for British overseas holiday-makers, but most of the crowds head for the south – to beachfront holiday rentals in Provence and villas in amongst the sunflower fields.  But even the south of France is a bit of a trek for those in search of week-long holiday rentals in France as an escape from the daily grind.

Just across the border from Belgium and a Channel crossing from England lies Nord-Pas-de-Calais, a region which is often overlooked in the rush for the south. Its major city is Lille which the crossroads of train travel between London, Paris and Brussels.  Here the landscape beautiful and varied, and the range of holiday rentals demonstrates a melting pot of histories and cultures. This area of France is very proud of its heritage, as any tourist will see from its museums and monuments, not to mention historic towns and cities dating back to the Romans. The region itself is clearly delineated – Normandy to the west, Belgium to the east, and the white cliffs of Dover to the north – visible on a clear day.

It is the location which makes holiday rentals so accessible at any time of year. Despite its convenience, it is not heavily populated; the countryside is covered with forests and meadows – with sandy beaches and soaring cliffs along the coast. Aside the landscape, Nord-Pas-de-Calais is brimming with things to see and do – holiday rentals are a popular holiday choice and there’s no place better for you to assimilate yourself with the region’s culture.   You do of course have to accept that the weather may not be guaranteed as it is in southern Europe.  However, Spring, Summer and Autumn often present fine and sunny (even hot) days, and when the days aren’t so good, there is no shortage of things to keep you busy. 

The landing grounds of Dunkerque and Boulogne give sharp reminders of a tragic chain of events – World War two casts a long shadow here. The world famous Somme battlefield is nearby. However,  finding holiday rentals here needn’t be entirely introspective. If you step back in history even further you will find a huge mediaveal influence – the Flemish beer and French gastronomy leave visitors fully fed and watered. For the foodies who visit, the plethora of tasting tours and food markets enable any self-catering holiday to become a gastronomic experience in its own right.

Visitors to France have difficult decisions to make – should they choose holiday rentals on one of the stunning and varied coastlines, or would they be better off based in an inland holiday apartment? A ski chalet in the mountains, or a wooden house by a lake? Urban, or rural?  France will offer you most than sufficient holiday rentals in all of those options, and so much more besides.

It is official now! After speculations about Zabel‘s possible career end the 38-year-old German professional cyclist announced officially his retirement. Zabel started as an amateur in 1987 when the only 17-year-old boy instantly celebrated his first triumph at the junior World Cup. With his team he came fourth at the men’s team pursuit competition. Back then he started for the German Democratic Republic. Two years later he was admitted as a member of the national team and was one of the best cyclists.

After the turnaround he switched to one of the first clubs which managed an amateur team semi professional, the RC Olympia Dortmund. Under the direction of Hennes Juckermann Zabel started for the first time at road races and finished the German National Cycling Championship 1991 at place two. With this victory the doors to the all-German national team were opened.

He achieved his last big victory as an amateur at the Olympic Summer Games 1992 in Barcelona when he finished a 194 kilometers long road race in fourth position. At the same race the septuplicate Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong just reached place fourteen. As a result the back then famous German professional team Telekom took notice of the 23-year-old newcomer and signed him on.

Since begin of his 16-year career Zabel could celebrate several victories. The German Cycling Federation keeps a national position table since 2000 which Zabel leads ever since. With a total of over 200 victories, of these six green jerseys of the Tour de France, Zabel is considered the most successful active professional cyclist of the world.

On October 3rd 2008, the 19th Day of German Unity, Zabel will attend his last race in Germany. It will be the one-day race from the Münsterland Giro which takes place since 2006. On an international basis Zabel will say good bye around one week later at the Paris Tour which he won in 1994, 2003 and 2005.

At the end of his great career Zabel gives his thanks to his team and fans who supplied him with backing and support even in difficult times. “I had a lot of fun this year and I was able to drive with the international competition at eye level. I don’t know if that would be possible another season so I think it is a perfect moment to retire.” Team-Manager Gerry van Gerwen said: „With Erik Zabel not only the Team Milram loses a significant athlete but the entire cycle sector. We want to say thank you for the great teamwork in the past three years.“

While we have to say good bye to one of our professional cyclist we can hope for the return of another one. After the US-American cyclist Lance Armstrong announced his return for the coming season, Jan Ullrich is thinking about doing the same. In an interview with the German online magazine stern.de Ullrich said: “The past two years were pretty hard for me and my family but this is now the past. I am very happy and satisfied with my current life. A comeback is not part of it yet. But nobody can look in the future so: Never say never. We will see what the future brings.”

Will we be able to see another duel of the old rivals at the Tour de France 2009? We are waiting anxiously!

Leonard Cohen has embarked on his 2009 World Tour, his second in as many years, and this time he will be performing across the United States for the first time in 15 years. Totaling 73 shows, Cohen will travel across North America throughout spring, and continue touring in the summer across Europe. The French tennis player of 23 years-old Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, won the third ATP title of his career in the SA Tennis Open at Johannesburg, South Africa in an hour and 48 minutes without dropping a set. Tsonga beat his countryman Jeremy Chardy in great way 6-4, 7-6(7-5). Both players played at their best but the experience of Tsonga in crucial moments gave him an edge to win the title. Tsonga won a total of $79.000 and his counterpart Chardy got the second place with $41,500. This ATP Tour final was the first one for the 21-years-old and No.61 of the world Jeremy Chardy.

During the game, Tsonga had a very good serve, making a total of 16 aces whereas Chardy did his job as well converting 11 aces. Tsonga took advantage of Chardy’s errors, which at the end cost him the sets and the game. In the first set, both players were defending successfully their serves, until Tsonga managed to break Chardy’s last serve to win the set.

Things ran almost the same in the second set, with incredible serves and both Frenchmen defending them, but this time none of them could break and that leaded to a tie-break in which both players lost their first service and the game became a strong battle. However, Tsonga with his experience and intelligent game forced Chardy to a service error to win the tie-break 7-5, winning the set and the championship.

Before coming to his first ATP final, in the semi-finals Jeremy Chardy defeated the World No. 5 and second seeded for the tournament, the Spaniard David Ferrer, which resulted as a surprise to Ferrer’s followers. For his part, Tsonga beat the Portuguese Frederico Gil 6-3, 6-4 at the semi-finals.

Tsonga expressed that he was really excited for this win and hopes to keep improving for the future tournaments. According to him, getting into finals previously has given him more confidence and his game is growing with the time and experience.

“I did a great job this week and am enjoying this moment. I am very happy to have succeeded. I played a great match. I served very well and I think his inexperience was evident at 5-4 in the first set when he missed some easy shots. But now he has some experience and I hope he’s going to do well next time,” expressed Tsonga.

This is Tsonga’s third ATP World Tour title and his first one this season 2009. His first two titles were obtained last year, first at the ATP World Tour in Bangkok defeating Novak Djokovic and then at the ATP Masters Series in Paris were he beat David Nalbandian. Moreover, it has to be mentioned that this start of the ATP 2009 campaign has been incredible for Tsonga, since he has reached three quarterfinals at Brisbane, Sydney and the Australian Open, besides adding this ATP title. In this good moment, we wish the best to Tsonga and we hope to see him growing on his tennis and showing all his amazing talent at the following tournaments.

This winter (2007-2008) snow fall and snow cover has been at its greatest over North America, Siberia  and China since 1966. And the Arctic ice sheet, which for so long has been all but doomed by modern climate models, has had a resurgence. Of course, this is just one winter and the next one could continue the warming trend of the last 2 decades. However there are now two big reasons why it could be possible that we are on the brink of a new ice age.

Firstly there is the global circulation of  the ocean currents which goes something like this. At the poles the sinking cold water dives rapidly downwards for thousands of  feet and drive a cold water current at the bottom of the ocean. Meanwhile as this cold water meets the tropics it warms and rises and gets driven north by surface winds, redistributing the heat. The more efficient this global ocean conveyor belt, the warmer the world. However as the  the melting of the Greenland ice sheet breaks all new records a huge amount of fresh water is making its way into our oceans. This water is less salty and doesn’t sink as efficiently, disrupting the circulation of the ocean currents, such as the gulf stream. As a consequence less heat is transferred north and we are all left reaching for our woolly hats and thermal pyjamas.

Okay, this process is quite well known now, and is just another theoretical model (although there have been signs recently of a slow down in the Gulf Stream bringing warm tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Atlantic. But, there is another factor in all of this which is getting climatologists and astronomers reaching for the medicine cabinet. Sun Spots.

Sun Spots are cooler patches on the surface of the sun, but they are magnetically very active and are associated with huge solar flares and coronal mass ejections. That is, a whole load of heat and energy being pumped out towards us and all the other planets in the solar system. However, sun spot activity is currently very low. The last time the sun was this inactive was back in the 500 years from the mid 1300’s to the mid 1800’s, commonly know as the little ice age. This global cooling of around 1-1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, caused livestock to die, crops to fail and widespread famine and gnashing of teeth around the world.  London’s River Thames would freeze regularly in the winters and little tykes would skate and chuck snowballs at each other, so it wasn’t all bad. 

So are we in for a cooler world, a new little ice age? Well who knows really. The global warming doom merchants are in the red corner, and the little ice age pessimists are in the blue corner. Who will be right? Only time will tell, but we will continue to get along with our lives in the normal way whatever nature throws at us. So get the sun block on in the summer, and two pairs of socks in the winter. It’s being so cheerful that keeps us going!
